Identity and Expression

The personality, essence, and approach we take when we create experiences.

Identity and expression

Overview

Aside from balance and purpose, moderation is critical in a complex and functional context. Overemphasizing elements or misusing our identity’s attributes can hamper our purpose and distract our audience.

If everything looks important, then nothing is.
— Patrick Lencioni, The table group
We decrease the expression volume in complex and functional environments so people can focus on their tasks.

Best practices

Here are some general guidelines to make the most of our identity attributes in the Product context:

Design

  • Avoid putting too many things in bold.
  • Leverage color and contrast to highlight important information and direct people’s attention.
  • Not everything needs an icon.
  • Effective use of white space will create balance and give people breathing room to focus on what matters.
