Preferred terms

Spelling

Only certain compound words should be hyphenated (e.g. well-known, how-to) where it reduces ambiguity in a sentence. Don’t hyphenate neologisms.

Vocabulary should be clear and straightforward. Avoid overly complex vocabulary.

Abbreviations and acronyms

Spell out words whenever possible. Shortened forms of words can be difficult for people and screen readers alike. Shortening is admissible when dealing with UI space constraints.

If an acronym isn’t widely recognized, spell it out the first time you mention it. Then, use the short version for all other references.
